There isn't much more to say that hasn’t already been said about the tragedy and bravery exhibited on the 5th of the December 2007, so I will keep this month’s message brief. As I have said many times before, I am truly proud of you, my brothers and sisters in blue. I watched with pride and awe as droves of you – on-duty and off, uniformed and plain clothes, blue stripers and command officers – barreled towards the Westroads Mall to protect our citizens and each other. We should always keep that fateful day in our hearts and minds so that we never lose sight of our duty to protect the innocent when no one else can, to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice that some in our community unfortunately make at the hands of deranged predators and to be prepared – God forbid – for the next time. Many within our ranks are likely struggling with the natural frustration that flows from the terrible loss of the eight innocent victims that day. Some things are simply beyond our control. Amid the sadness however, take pride and some comfort in that fact that you did shepherd many innocent victims to safety that day. Imagine the feeling of relief that many terrified customers must have felt as they saw their police officers rushing through the nightmare and to their aid during what was likely the most terrifying experience of their lives. The events of December 5th shook the foundation of our city and department. Although many might expect this tragedy to weaken us, I believe it will instead serve to make us a better community and a stronger and even more prepared police department. Stay safe.
