Open Enrollment

by Paul Murphy

As summer starts winding down, the Benefits Division of the City of Omaha has started planning for this year's open enrollment for City benefits. The open enrollment period for 2008 benefits will run from October 15 to November 2, 2007. Open enrollment will again be conducted through an online process that allows you to enroll or make changes to your benefits at work or in the convenience of your own home. In addition to the on-line process, representatives from Colonial will be available at various work sites to answer questions and assist you.

Major highlights: Colonial will again be offering four supplemental plans in addition to the core benefit programs: accident expense insurance, cancer expense insurance, critical assistance plan, and universal life. The City is currently evaluating a method to speed up this enrollment process and, hopefully, this will be in place for this year's enrollment.

The group life insurance carrier will again offer the opportunity to increase your optional term life amount up to the next level without showing insurability. Optional amounts available are $25,000, $50,000, $75,000 or $100,000. The Flexible Spending Account medical reimbursement limit will be raised from $2,500 to $3,000 for 2008. Individual information will be provided to you about your current benefits approximately two weeks before the start of open enrollment. It is important that you review your current benefits to determine if you need to make changes. Changes must be made during this open enrollment period unless you have a qualifying event. You need to go through the open enrollment process even if you are not making changes so the City has a record of the benefits that you want to have in force for 2008.
