Health Care: Importance High

Recently the Union has been contacted by several members that had issues dealing with our Health Care and the birth of a child.

The City of Omaha is a self insured plan and as a courtesy to our membership we have a 30 day grace period on the birth of a child where they provide medical coverage. The member has to notify the City of Omaha Benefits Department of the date of birth and name of the child as well as any other vital information needed to add the child to your plan. Should you not notify the City of Omaha within 30 days the health care coverage will lapse and your child will not be a member of the health care plan and you will be responsible for all medical claims, you will also have a 30 day lapse in coverage once the child is added to the plan.

The City of Omaha will send out a congratulations letter and reminder to add your child to the health care plan. We have had several instances where the member did not receive the letter, the letter was addressed to the spouse or they overlooked the information in the body of the letter.

You are also required to notify the City of Omaha and Coventry Health Care to add your spouse in the event that you get married.

In the event of a change in your plan through marriage, birth, adoption, death, divorce or a spouse losing employment contact:
